COLDWAR CAKE TRIUMPH FOR SUTTON COLDFIELD ONCE AGAIN.  Warley fielded an understrength team again for the 6th ColdWar Cake Match - the traditional warm up to the new season.  However, a good showing from Warley's associated Junior team players, Birmingham Checkmates, meant that at half time Warley were winning.  The match was 12 a side - with each player playing 2 30 minute rapidplay games against the same opponent.  Sutton rallied well in the second match to take the title once again.  Next year it will be played at Warley again and hopefully we'll win the match.

5 Minutes Blitz tournament success for Ralph Bailey.  On Thursday 7th July Warley Quinborne (Senior Club) and Birmingham Checkmates (Junior Club) had an all play all 5 minute Blitz tournament at Reds Sports and Social Club.  A bit of fun but a chance for the youngsters to go head to head with older opposition.  It was a great night with two leagues of play.  The winner of each league went head to head in an Armaggadon style final.  Micky Singh just lost out to a calm and collected Ralph Bailey.  Warley is proud to be associated with Birmingham Checkmates and see the link between the two chessclubs (who share the same venue) as positive for the future of chess in Birmnigham.  To find out more about either the junior club or the senior club please contact the club secretary John Fahy on the contact page.

2009 /10 Report

Wow - what a season:  the first team secured their place in Division 1 after promotion last year and Andy Southall won the Division 1 League Individual.

Division 2 had an incredible season:  Not only did they win the Homer Trophy, but they secured promotion into Division 1 after a stunning end of season run, beating teams that outgraded them in the final three matches, Wolverhampton, Stourbridge and Olton A.  This resulted in a promotion play-off match against Solihul whom they had lost to earlier in the season by 5-1.  However, after a tense match Division 2 won promotion against Solihul on board count!  The team also retained the prestigious Gothard Cup!

Division 5 won their league after a tense championship play-off, again this was secured on board count.  The team also smashed teams around them to win the Barrington Trophy.

Division 6 were just a point away from securing a play-off place.  So well done to them. Pauline Woodward also won the league individual title!

Hightlight of the season ... Simon Smith Smashes International Master Lawrence Cooper

Simon with the trophy for becoming BDCL Division 2 champion 2009.

Congratulations to Alan Agnew; Club Champion 2009.

Well done to runner-up John Fahy who beat Mike Wildboar (Div 1) in the Semi-Final.

Sadly Warley Quinborne came a close second in the 4th Coldwar Cup - the annual pre-season match has now been won 3 times by Sutton Coldfield.  This year Warley had no first-team players in its line up.  Notable draws were achieved by Simon Smith, Micky Singh and Phil Bull who played on boards 1-3 and were outgraded by their opponents.  We'll beat them next year...

2008/9 Highlight

Congratulations to team 2a who not only achieved promotion to Division 1, but they also won the Terrill Trophy.  A fine achievement.
